Tree Cop

Tree Cop - a little doodle cartoon I did while waiting for the tree cops to clear me to enter my own property. It's a slang term for Park Service and Forest Service *POLICE* in case you hadn't heard the term before.

When I was growing up, these guys were friendly park rangers. I guess those types are still out there, somewhere. But in recent years they've kind of turned into some kind of paramilitary Gestapo BS ...not sure why. I guess you just can't have too much authoritarian jack-bootery in America these days.

Thankfully, we usually have nice ones here. But not always. Every once in a while they have some visiting tree cop who has a Wyatt Earp/Dirty Harry/The Terminator fantasy going. And THAT is truly disgusting. Otherwise, they're okay.

You don't really need a gag; people who have spent a lifetime living off the taxpayers who say that those same taxpayers shouldn't get anything back for their money are humorous all by themselves, just for their total, in-your-face hypocrisy.

Everyone who is against government healthcare: Give YOURS up first, ass clown, then at least you won't be a total hypocrite... a compassionless prick, maybe, but not a hypocrite.

BTW, "government-run healthcare" already exists in America, it's called Medicare. It works just fine, thank you and costs far less than private insurance. And also by the way, private insurance bureaucrats kill thousands of people every year - by their own admission - because they are in business to make profits not take care of sick people.

Stanton Friedman Cartoon

I did a live caricature of Stanton Friedman, UFO Hunter, at the McMinnville Oregon festival. It wasn't that great but you know... lighting was bad and such.

As I was working, I added the gag; his microphone - unbeknown to Stanton, has become an alien! And there's another one hiding in his pocket.... (Markers on 9x12 paper)

A couple of days later, I drew a cartoon of Stanton Friedman - from memory - that was more complete. This is ALWAYS easier for me after a live draw. For some reason, it makes it possible for me to do better work from memory.

Dr. Stanton Friedman pilots his flying saucer - next destination, Zeta Reticuli, 39 light years. It's approximately what I remember from what he said.

The latter cartoon was drawn on 9x12 paper (Canson Recycled 80lb). It is a pen sketch (Uni-Ball Vision Needle) that was then scanned into my computer. I did the coloring in Photo Shop. If you want to see if I got the likeness but you don't know what the doc looks like, check StantonFriendman.com.

Susan Boyle Toon

I think that America has some kind of schizophrenia where we want to feel good about ourselves, have no reason to feel that way, so we transfer our feelings to characters we see on TV. Susan Boyle of Britain is our latest synthetic love affair.
Susan Boyle is a very good singer, middle-aged and not particularly glamorous. She made a big splash in England thank's to the Simon Cowell show, Britain's Got Talent. And then YouTube. Simon Cowell would have us believe that she came out of nowhere and he was shocked at her beautiful voice. However, the evidence suggests otherwise. Oh, her voice is authentic but they knew what they were doing. It wasn't the big surprise Cowell claimed.

The term we have for that is astroturf. That is, grass roots that are really fake, plastic, and planned. That doesn't take away from her voice but it should remind us that overnight sensations are seldom either...

The sketch was based on the video. I kept it to the basic sketch because it fits her two dimensional character, just as Simon Cowell created her.... Thumbs up, Susan! It's funny, any pictures I've seen of Ms Boyle other than the TV grabs, she doesn't look anywhere this dumpy. Plain, yes...

I've read that the TV camera puts 10 pounds on a person, so that may be part of the problem. Since I was unable to determine exactly HOW MANY cameras are on Ms Boyle right now, I drew her as she appeared on television.

Mel Gibson Caricature Cartoon Family Values

Yes, Mel Gibson isn't just another pretty face. And boy is he ever pretty! Women just love him. And obviously - since he is so pretty - he must have important things to say. And he DOES!

Mel Gibson Family Values

Mel Gibson wants you to know that he's an ultra-conservative, super-duper mega Christian! In fact, it's pretty much all he talks about. Yes indeed, he's a family values guy all the way. You just can't argue with Mel when it comes to those family values (or Jews).

But like many people who choose to wear their faith on their sleeves, Mel has another side too - that he doesn't really want you to know about.

It seems that besides being a belligerent bigot (which always seems to be okay with the family values folk) he also is probably a serial adulterer - which sort of isn't okay with them... well, you can just say you're sorry and all is forgiven, I guess. You don't actually have to be a better person, you just have to spout the right doctrines in everyone's collective faces. But Mel's wife has finally gotten tired of his version of family values, and has filed for divorce. (In this divorce matter, Mel Gibson demands a right he would never grant to a gay person, a non-believer, or a woman who thinks she has rights equal to those of a man; absolute privacy).

So here's to ya, Mel! You keep telling others how to live good conservative Christian lives while you keep porking the hot chicks in the back room. Nobody in your crowd will ever hold it against you.

"Bobby" Jindal is the governor of Louisiana and a favorite Snake Oil salesman for the far right. If you want a smiling-faced rant on why science is evil or why tax cuts for the rich is the solution to EVERY problem on earth, call on Piyush "Bobby" Jindal.

I don't know if caricaturists are a bunch of far right wing nut jobs or if the right wing rags are the only ones paying. And I'm afraid to ask because I'll probably be called a communist or something. Either way, I can't resist trying to add some balance back in the field.

This image came to me when I was waking up this morning. I don't know if I was thinking about a certain movie, or the ability of the Republican party to thwart President Obama's most earnest efforts, but here it is:

I'm not sure he looks scared enough. I was going for fear but I didn't want to make it too ridiculous either. Like all of my political work, I like the fact that this idea came to me spontaneously and with it's own ambiguity.

In other words, if you are a Democrat it says, Republicans are scary. And if you are a Republican it says, Damn right! We're scary!

I knew from the beginning that this seemed t-shirt worthy, so I posted my work on some items just for you.

Caricature is broadly defined as a portrait of a person that is exaggerated for comic effect. But for real world purposes, we should say that a caricatures is a cartoon of a person that looks enough like an individual so that you can still recognize him/her.
